Track work progresses at broadmeadow racecourse as they’re still struggling to recover from their rain delay.
Some of the racecourse’s fans are even more distraught, with a crowd of over 100 holding a “stop the boats!” demonstration outside the racecourse today as part of a campaign to highlight the lack of funding for the racecourse, which was closed last week and only reopened last week.
And as many people arrive at the course today, they’re met by police – with many taking part in ‘Stand Up and Stand For Tomorrow’ rallies in recent days.
A video posted on Facebook shows the protesters holding up placards telling the police not to stop the boats, which they shout at, calling for action as they walk off a boat.
Some have even attempted to torch the racecourse, setting fire to one of the gates and throwing rocks at police as they move in with shields and batons.
Protester Aya Wootton has told Sky News: “I felt like a child again, like the racecourse was closed because I didn’t do anything to stop them. I just wanted to see how many of us are still up there.
“They say everything’s under control, the boats are coming in. So they need to make some noise, make some noise. It’s like my last nightmare, what if there’s nothing we can do?”
